The 13 Kannada Vowels (ಸ್ವರಗಳು)

The Kannada vowel set is similar to other South Indian scripts. Each vowel has a short and long form, distinguished by length of pronunciation:

ಅ (A, as in "up") — ಅರಸ (King)
ಆ (Ā, as in "father") — ಆನೆ (Elephant)
ಇ (I, as in "it") — ಇಲಿ (Mouse)
ಈ (Ī, as in "eel") — ಈಶ್ವರ (Lord Shiva)
ಉ (U, as in "put") — ಉಡುಪಿ (city name)
ಊ (Ū, as in "ooze") — ಊಟ (Meal)
ಋ (Ru) — ಋಷಿ (Sage)
ಎ (E, as in "egg") — ಎಲೆ (Leaf)
ಏ (Ē, as in "angel") — ಏಣಿ (Ladder)
ಐ (Ai, as in "ice") — ಐದು (Five)
ಒ (O, as in "omit") — ಒಂಟೆ (Camel)
ಓ (Ō, as in "open") — ಓಟ (Running)
ಔ (Au, as in "out") — ಔಷಧ (Medicine)

The 34 Kannada Consonants (ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು)

Consonants are organized into phonetic groups called vargas. The ka-varga (ಕ ಖ ಗ ಘ ಙ), cha-varga (ಚ ಛ ಜ ಝ ಞ), ta-varga, tha-varga, pa-varga and the semi-vowels (ಯ ರ ಲ ವ ಶ ಷ ಸ ಹ ಳ). Each has its own character, sound and picture association in our app. The Vowels category is free; Consonants is part of the premium set. Both use the same format: the letter, its picture word, English phonetic pronunciation and native audio.
