What Is the Telugu Alphabet (వర్ణమాల)?

The Telugu alphabet (తెలుగు వర్ణమాల) is one of the oldest scripts in the world with classical language status. It is the script used in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Telugu communities worldwide. The alphabet has:

16 Vowels (స్వరాలు): అ ఆ ఇ ఈ ఉ ఊ ఋ ఎ ఏ ఐ ఒ ఓ ఔ అం అః
36 Consonants (హల్లులు): organized in phonetic groups (వర్గాలు) by place of articulation
Unique letters: ళ and ఱ — sounds found only in Telugu, not in other Indian languages
