The Tamil script has 12 vowels (உயிர் எழுத்துகள்) and 18 consonants (மெய் எழுத்துகள்), plus 216 combined forms. Our app teaches each Tamil letter through picture association and native audio so children recognise and remember them naturally — including the unique letters ழ, ள, ற and ண found only in Tamil.
The Tamil alphabet (தமிழ் அகரவரிசை) is one of the oldest writing systems in the world, with over 2,000 years of continuous literary tradition. It consists of 12 vowels (உயிர் எழுத்துகள்) and 18 consonants (மெய் எழுத்துகள்), plus combined forms. Tamil is unique in having letters like ழ, ள, ற and ண that exist in no other major language. Each letter card shows:
This mnemonic approach — linking each abstract Tamil letter to a vivid image — mirrors the method Tamil Nadu primary schools use, making the app ideal for supplementing formal schooling or for diaspora children learning Tamil at home.
Our app introduces Tamil letters through the sequence children learn in Tamil Nadu schools: அ ஆ இ ஈ உ ஊ எ ஏ ஐ ஒ ஓ ஔ for vowels, followed by the consonants க ங ச ஞ ட ண த ந ப ம ய ர ல வ ழ ள ற ன. Special attention is given to the unique Tamil sounds ழ (zha) and ற (rra) that have no equivalent in other languages.
Vowels (அ through ஔ) and consonants (க through ன) each get their own illustrated flashcard with audio, phonetic guide and a memorable picture word to anchor the sound.
Tap any letter card to hear the correct Tamil pronunciation. Children hear the letter sound and the associated picture word together — just like a Tamil teacher saying 'அ for அம்மா'.
Every card includes an English-script phonetic hint for unique Tamil sounds like ழ ('zha' as in the Tamil town name Zhuthai) so parents can guide their children confidently.
