Spell It: Letter by Letter, On Purpose

Recognizing a word and spelling it are two different skills — plenty of kids can read "friend" on sight but stumble the moment they try to write it themselves. Spell It closes that gap by having your child rebuild each word from its individual letters.

How Spell It Works

Each word becomes a short hands-on puzzle:

  • 🔊 The word is spoken aloud — the starting point is always sound, the same as real spelling
  • 🧩 Colorful letter tiles appear — including a few extra decoys, so guessing by elimination alone isn't enough
  • ✅ Your child drags letters into order — building the word one correct letter at a time

For irregular sight words especially, this is where the tricky part of the word — a silent letter, an unexpected vowel — actually gets learned, rather than glossed over.

Why Spelling Reinforces Reading

Reading and spelling draw on the same underlying knowledge — the exact sequence of letters that makes up a word — but spelling demands more of that knowledge than reading does. A child can often recognize "because" by its general shape and length without knowing precisely which letters come in which order; spelling it correctly requires that precision. Practicing sight words this way is sometimes called orthographic mapping: building a durable, letter-accurate memory of a word rather than a fuzzy visual impression of it. That more solid memory is also what makes a word instantly recognizable later, which is exactly why Spell It sits between Listen & Pick and Write It in a Word Wizard level — it's the bridge between recognizing a word and being able to produce it.

🎨

Colorful, Draggable Tiles

Large, colorful letter tiles make spelling feel like a hands-on puzzle rather than a written test.

🔀

Decoy Letters Included

Extra letters mixed in mean success requires actually knowing the spelling, not just placing the only tiles available.

🧠

Orthographic Memory

Rebuilding a word letter by letter creates a far more durable memory of its exact spelling than reading it alone ever does.

FAQ

Common Questions

My child can read a word but can't spell it — is that normal?

Very normal — recognizing a word and spelling it draw on related but different skills, and spelling requires more precise letter-order knowledge. Spell It is designed specifically to build that missing piece.

Why are there extra letters in the tile set?

Without decoy letters, a child could complete a word just by placing every available tile — the extras make sure success actually reflects knowing the correct spelling.
